Cycloplegic eyedrops are diagnostic medications that temporarily paralyze the ciliary muscle inside the eye, which controls focusing. By relaxing this muscle, we can measure your true refractive error without the influence of accommodation (the eye's automatic focusing mechanism), resulting in a more accurate prescription.
This procedure is particularly important for children, who have very strong focusing abilities that can mask their true prescription. A child's eyes can unconsciously compensate for farsightedness or overcompensate during testing, leading to inaccurate prescriptions. Cycloplegic refraction reveals the full extent of any refractive error.
While the temporary effects of cycloplegic drops (blurred near vision and light sensitivity) can be inconvenient, the diagnostic value is significant. For many patients, especially children and young adults, cycloplegic refraction is the only way to determine the most accurate prescription and ensure proper visual development.

Comprehensive features and services included in this examination.
This service is ideal for the following individuals.
A step-by-step guide to your appointment experience.
We first perform a standard refraction to measure your vision before drops, giving us a comparison point and baseline measurements.
Cycloplegic drops are instilled in both eyes. We may use one or multiple drops depending on the medication chosen and your age.
The drops take 20-45 minutes to reach full effect. During this time, you can relax in our waiting area. We'll provide reading material or activities for children.
Once the drops have taken effect, we perform refraction again. With accommodation paralyzed, we can now measure your true refractive error.
With pupils dilated, we may also examine the internal eye structures and assess eye alignment more accurately.
We explain the findings, provide your accurate prescription, and give instructions for managing the temporary effects of the drops.
State-of-the-art equipment used for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
The most commonly used cycloplegic agent, providing effective accommodation paralysis with effects lasting 6-24 hours.
A shorter-acting option sometimes used for screening, with effects typically lasting 4-6 hours.
The strongest cycloplegic agent, used when maximum effect is needed. Effects can last several days.
An instrument that allows objective measurement of refractive error by observing light reflexes from the retina.
